Fabric or roman shades combine the easy operation of a shade with the beauty of fabric window treatments. They come in a wide variety of styles and features and can work well with any type of decor. Manufacturers offer a variety of decorative fabrics that will give your home a crisp tailored look. If you want to dress them up, you can add drapery, shutters or a cornice or valance.
Insulated roman shades, also called thermal roman shades, have an insulating piece of fabric on the window-side layer of the shade. They will not only make your home more beautiful and but also more comfortable. Insulated shades reduce the need for heating and central air conditioning, helping you save on your energy costs.
If you would like to make your own insulated roman shades, Solar Components Corporation sells components of its Warm Window Insulated Shade System. The shade material is made from four layers of fabric quilted together. The reflective mylar layer reflects radiant heat back into your and outside heat away in the summer. The side of the shade that faces the room is covered with your choice of decorative fabric; a tightly woven light- to medium-weight fabric made of cotton or a cotton-polyester blend is recommended. Videos on the company site demonstrate how to make these shades.
If a DIY project does not appeal to you, Comfortex offers several different styles in its Fusion collection of insulated roman shades. Fabric panels hang over a 1/2 " single cell honeycomb cellular liner; the panels nest behind one another when raised. Their high-end product, the Blackout Blend, offers alternating panels in a choice of two colors and comes standard with a continuous cord loop system.
You can also buy insulated roman shades from the BedBathStore and Country Curtains. The cotton-polyester blend shades available at the BedBathStore have an insulated foam backing and come in blue, mahogany, natural, sienna, sage, linen, and white colors. Country Curtains sells a bamboo shade, also with a foam backing, which comes in seven widths unbanded or with a two-inch cotton border in sage green or wheat colors.
