Last summer I had done some experimenting with different types of window coverings at my own personal home in an effort to best measure the effectiveness of different types of window coverings and the actual effect they had on my summer cooling electric bill. I live in Florida and have plenty of windows facing both south and west. In the summer, cooling rooms facing these directions has been a real problem. I had covered the windows years ago with a best selling faux wood blind. My best calculations calculated an R value somewhere around 2.7. Although not bad, it certainly didn't do much to keep my electric bill and the power company at bay. With summer cooling bills approaching $400 a month, I figured it was time to try something better. I knew from my years of experience that cellular honeycomb shades offered the best R value. Truth be told, I had no idea how good of an insulator they really were. After just one month trying the new shades, I noticed a dramatic decrease in my energy cooling bills and measured a much improved R value of 4.8! My first full month with the new shades, my September electric bill was cut in half to less than $200! Not only did these shades take care of my high energy bill problems, they offered an updated appearance and came in a much more exciting color pallet than my old plain white faux wood blinds.
Please check in next week as I will cover insulating shades in more detail by covering the different types of lift systems available and how they effect shade operation.
Want to see more information? I have posted detailed R value information on these shades here on my website by clicking here and would be happy to share the information with you.

Which presser foot is the most useful for my serger machine.. cording, elastic, blind hem or shirring foot?
I just bought a serger a month ago and am trying to figure out which presser foot to purchase as an option. All of the presser foots that I listed price between $30-$40 except the cording foot prices at $20. I want to be able to make a seatwall pillow, purses and clothes with gathering and elastic as well. My embroidery machine has a blind hem stitch option. I've never made anything with cording so not sure if the cording foot would really make a big difference. I also don't know how much time the elastic and shirring foot would save. let me know what your experience is and if you think any of these are worth buying.
The optional feet can make your serger/sewing experience delightful. Of course, with all things, a little practice will enlighten you to new techniques and proficiency in the craft. After you familiarize yourself with the optional feet you will be pleased with the end result and time saved. Also, look into joining sewing clubs or taking classes through your dealer, fabric store, and local community college. Often manufacturers provide hints, projects, and technical support through their web sites. As a teen in the mid 80's I discovered the joy of sewing fashion apparel and home decor, with a short break during 2004-2006. About 15 months ago I reconnected with the craft and also traded my old Singer sewing machine and serger for a Husqvarna Viking Designer SE and Huskylock 936. Currently, I am enrolled in my dealer's software class, sewing and embroidery clubs, and I am completing the final week of my serger class. I have enjoyed all of the classes and networking opportunities. In the end, my young teen has become intrigued with possibilities of sewing her own fashion apparel and I have begun to teach her on my old machines. Stick with it and have fun with your new serger.
