Inducting a major cut in monthly bills without heavily investing into energy saving appliances is every households dream. To do so, you first probably try to figure out what gobbles up the most energy within your home, and in many cases you will find it to be your heating system. Now, in order to achieve the same feeling of comfort consuming less energy, you may want to know that heating efficiency depends on your heating habits as much as the type of system installed.
So what can you personally do to optimize your energy consumption for heating? First of all, the ideal temperature will with all certainty vary among the different locations in your home depending on the activities you pursue. While for the nursery, living room, bathroom and toilette a higher temperature is necessary, the bedroom, kitchen and corridor should function with less heating. So don't set your system to a standard level everywhere, rather adjust it separately in different parts of your home, knowing that every degree you save will in turn save energy and keep your expenses lower. Apart from setting the temperature of your home with care, there are other aspects to consider and actions to take to ensure the desired energy efficiency:
1. While sleeping your cover also keeps you warm, so switch your system to a lower level when you hit the sack, especially in the parts of your home you don't use during the night.
2. Air your home by keeping the windows open for an adequate amount of time depending on the season, but switch off the heating system for the time being to avoid inefficiency. If you have the chance, repeat the process several times a day for shorter periods, with the windows open wide. This way you will achieve proper air circulation without cooling down your home. Assuming you are cold and the temperature outside is higher than inside, it is additionally recommended to open your windows.
3. At night curtains, shutters, window shades and blinds also serve as a barrier between you and the cold outdoors, so use them. In the daytime, however, in case of cold weather, keep your windows free to let the sun shine in. When it is very hot outside, cover your windows.
4. The kitchen is warm while cooking, and you can leave the oven door open to gain extra degrees by letting the heat escape. Be aware though, that cooking which gives off steam will raise the moisture level and it takes more energy to heat humid air. Therefore, in such cases, use the over-hob extractor if you have one, if not, open your kitchen window and close the kitchen door. Also, to minimize dense air, cover your pans with well-fitting lids and don't allow them to boil for longer than needed.
5. Keep your bathroom door closed while taking a shower or a bath in order to avoid vapor from spreading to other parts of your home. It is also smart to air your bathroom right after your hygiene activity as humid areas are at high risk for mold. For the same reason, dry your clothes outdoors as much as possible. It will also lessen your fuel bill.
6. Covering your heating system with clothes, curtains and furniture will not only set back heat circulation, but may lead to condensation being produced, so leave it unhampered.
7. Keeping doors of rooms with lower temperature closed will keep the rest of your home from cooling down.
8. To avoid drafts, make sure your front and back door closes properly, and your windows are air-tight. The cheapest way to seal any leak is to stuff a towel or shirt in front of it.
Besides these easy to follow tips there are several other activities you can pursue which will keep you warm and for which you don't even have to turn on your heating system or think about shielding windows or getting rid of humid air for that matter. There is nothing better than regular exercise to maintain a healthy body that is less sensitive to cold. Warm clothes preferably added in layers will also help you to maintain a temperature which is just right for you. Take off a layer when doing higher intensity activities and add one when you are not moving around. And always remember, after your hubby, the next best thing to snuggle up to on a chili winter morning is a warm cup of cappuccino.
