BEWARE THE INNOCUOUS
I wandered down
a dusty road.
The grit stung my eyes
and I wiped them with
a sweat slick hand,
making them burn,
more from the salt
than dirt.
I stopped in the
withering shadow
of a beaten clapboard building
and watched
an alley cat
come close.
She smiled a feline smile
and I noticed that
she had
only one good green eye,
and no whiskers.
Her tail had an odd curve...
broken once,
I wagered.
So familiar,
did she seem,
that I scooped her into
my tired arms,
and carressed her ageworn fur.
I choked
on the dust
and a pain
more searing
than the sun
blinded me...
threw me to
the ground.
I convulsed and saw
that one green eye,
stare at me.
"Time to rest"
a liquid voice,
from the angel of death,
who looked so familiar
just like
an old alley cat.
Oh wow, I absolutely did not see that coming. What a strange and dark encounter and a blinding instant of epiphany. I was there holding the cat with you, so your words hit hard. In this fantastic poem you have created an entirely unique depiction of the angel of death. There remains mystery. I love this. I completely mesmerized me. Thank you.
