Choosing Shades for Your Tampa Home

You have to decide on the right window treatment when doing the interior design of your Tampa home. You can choose from shutters, blinds, curtains, draperies or shades from your Tampa window treatment specialist. Your decision will be based on the look you want for each room as well as functional issues such as the amount of Tampa sunlight and heat you want to filter out.

Shades are often chosen by those who want a more streamlined look for their window treatment as compared to curtains or draperies. Shades are made of fabric stretched flat and moved down to cover a window or up to leave it open. Corded pulley systems or spring loaded rollers are used to control the up and down movement. Tampa homeowners usually prefer transparent shades that provide privacy from the outside but allow those inside the house to enjoy the outside view while filtering light.

There are many styles of shades to choose from. Austrian Shades have soft elegant scallops that are raised and lowered through tapes that go through a series of rings. This type of shades can closely mimic the romantic look of curtains and draperies.

Roman Shades tend to look more tailored and are provided with a pocket at the bottom through which a lattice strip is inserted to provide weight. The shade is then mounted on a board which is attached to the top of the window. The effect when pulled up is often a series of horizontal pleats which can be wide or narrow.

A variation of the Roman Shade is the Balloon Shade. The Balloon Shade, however, is dressier with inverted box pleats that bunch outwards when pulled up, hence the balloon effect.

Another variation is the Russian Shade which has a shirred top on a rod pocket. The effect is a softly gathered look when pulled up.

Reverse Roll-Up Shades have a more modern look and are rolled up or down from a rod that is inside a padded cornice.

Often, the usual shades are not enough to filter out light and heat, but homeowners do not want to give up the view from their windows. These homeowners opt for solar shades against the very harsh Tampa sun.

The sun’s UV rays can be very harmful and can fade carpeting, rugs, upholstery and wood floors and furniture. It would be very expensive to have to replace these items sooner than their usual life span.

The sun can also be a threat to the family occupying the home, being a cause of skin cancer.  It would be very inconvenient to have to use sunblock even indoors at home everyday.

Furthermore, strong sunlight causes heat to pool in the house, drastically raising electric bills for air conditioning and other cooling devices.

Aside from that, glare can be very inconvenient when reflecting against computer screens, television screens and mirrors, or preventing people from staying in their favored spots in the home.

Solar shades block as much as 99% of the Tampa sun’s UV rays. That is the equivalent of an SPF 80 sunblock, freeing you from having to slather on sunscreen creams and lotions at home. It’s also like having a protective invisible cover on your floor, furniture, upholstery, rugs and carpets. Your electric bill will also surely go down.

When choosing the exact style and type of shades to use, you might even find matching upholstery for your living room and matching bedding for your bedroom. There are almost unlimited colors and designs to choose from. Check your Hunter Douglas dealer in Tampa to make sure you get the best value for your money.

Are sunscreen roller shades really a good solution for the home?

I have big windows that get lots of full sun. A consultant recommends "soleil" sunscreen shades that cut out a lot of the light but keep the view. They are used commercially a lot, and aren't cheap. But they seem like a good solution.

My family had nothing but problems with them... really, they're one more thing to break.

Have you considered interior shades or maybe even tinting the windows? Those might work, too...
