Proper Preparation Makes All the Difference When House Painting in Tempe
When you are thinking about starting a little house painting project, there are a few key points that you need to consider if you wish the paint job to not only look good, but to also look professional and have a long lasting finish.
Many people look for a quick fix, so they go out, choose some paint and come home and get stuck into it. This will definitely create a change within the home, however, unless proper care is taken in the preparation stages, the change could be very short lived and it could in fact, turn out to be a disaster.
As you are walking around your home you may notice that paint is peeling or cracking in certain rooms, or it could be that the window frames or doors have peeling paint as well. If this is the case, then it is extremely important to attend to these matters before you even think about lifting a paintbrush to the area.
Even if there is no direct evidence of peeling and cracking, it is important to prepare the surface correctly. If this step is not taken with care, or left out completely, signs of the wear and tear will come through. The wall surface, door or window frame will not be smooth, and the new paint when dry, will also be susceptible to peeling, flaking and cracking.
When painting a room within the house, have a look at the color of the existing paint. If it is a dark color and the new color is going to be a lighter shade, you will need to sand it back as much as possible and then apply an undercoat so that the surface becomes a neutral color. Existing blemishes will need to be sanded also and any paint that is cracking will need to be scraped away prior to the sanding process. You will be left with a smooth surface ready for the painting to begin.
If you are painting wooden surfaces in your home such as window frames and doors, it would also be a sensible idea to have a look and see if they need repairing before applying a fresh coat of paint. Wood will need to be sanded back and if there is evidence that the joins are coming apart, now would be the time to fix them, either with wood putty or a gap filler.
Some people prefer to leave their repair work and painting to the professionals and this is always a good idea to ensure the job is done correctly and so that the end result is as you had imagined. This is particularly true with exterior house painting.
House painting, inside or out, is a very rewarding experience, and whether you do it yourself or you hire a professional, the preparation stage is one that is crucial.

Need help with refinishing table?
I am in the process of refinishing a solid wood table with a teak veneer. I started with brushing on Poly-shades by Minwax and ended (with the advice of someone here on Yahoo questions) with Minwax Polyurethane Spray. The spray is fantastic and giving me a very nice finish.
The directions say that the spray needs to be applied within every two hours. If this window is missed, you are to wait 72 hours, sand, and respray. Last night I sprayed a coat every two hours and also did a light sanding in between. I want to lay one final coat and would like to know if it is necessary to wait 72 hours before sanding and spraying. This is obviously what I did last night, but I didn't know if waiting longer than two hours (it's now been 24) would cause what's already done to take longer to fully cure since it's already started.
Please advise as I would like to get this project done, but don't want to take a short cut that will create ultimately more work (and expense) in the long run.
I know how frustrating waiting can get. But remember you are almost there. Drying times can change depending on your environment. I assume that you have the table in a dry heated room.
I have finished more furniture then I can even count. If your final coat of spray finish has sat for 24 hours in the conditions described above, you are safe to proceed.
Here is what I recommend. You are proceeding correctly by lightly sanding between coats. I use 400 grit wet/dry (black) sand paper when I am at the stage that you are. Just knock off the the high spots that are now most likely being caused by dust in the air. Note after your first coat, you were sanding a much rougher surface caused by the wood grain raising from the moisture content and dust in the air.
Back to your final coat preparation; after sanding lightly, use a tac cloth to remove any dust particles left on the surface. Once you are satisfied, apply your final coat of polyurethane.
Your not done yet, when dry rub your hand in across the surface, feel those little annoying bumps? These are dust particles and unless you are in a clean room designed for finishing, you are going to have these.
However, I have a solution. After your final coat, once again lightly sand, lightly as in very lightly. Then take some Johnson and Johnson paste furniture wax and apply with a soft cloth. Buff when dry. This will give you the ultimate finish and make your finish piece look and feel professionally done.
